Trip Experience Guide

A slow highland stay with temples early and rice fields late. Middays are for the shade of a garden, a cooking lesson or nothing much at all.

Day 1

Ubud: Arrival & the Campuhan Ridge

Drive up from the airport, about ninety minutes, and walk the Campuhan Ridge in the late afternoon, a paved path between two ravines of the Wos River. After dark, a dance performance fills the palace courtyard with gamelan and torchlight.

Day 2

Tirta Empul & Jatiluwih: Springs & Rice Terraces

Reach Tirta Empul near Tampaksiring early, when Balinese families queue to bathe beneath the carved spouts of its spring-fed pools. After lunch, drive west to Jatiluwih, where subak channels feed terraces climbing towards Mount Batukaru.

Day 3

Ubud Market: Offerings & Return

Walk through Ubud market at first light, when stallholders sell palm-leaf trays, marigolds and frangipani for the day’s canang sari. A late breakfast overlooking the paddies, then the drive back to the airport for your onward flight.

We time the temple visits around ceremony days, which can close a courtyard or fill it with processions. If you would rather see Tegallalang’s terraces, they are about twenty-five minutes north of Ubud and best before eight.
