Trip Experience Guide

A slower Bali of weaving villages, royal gardens and black-sand bays. Mornings are for walking or snorkelling; afternoons drift towards a veranda and the view of Agung.

Day 1

Sidemen: Arrival & the Valley

Drive from the airport to Sidemen, about two hours, climbing through villages where every family compound keeps its own shrine. By late afternoon Mount Agung stands clear above the terraces, and the valley goes quiet except for water running in the channels.

Day 2

Sidemen: Rice Fields & Songket Looms

Walk out early with a local guide along the dykes between the paddies, past chilli, cacao and salak palms. Later, visit a family workshop where songket is woven on wooden looms, with gold and silver thread worked into the cloth.

Day 3

Tirta Gangga: Water Palace & the Amed Coast

Step across the stone pads of Tirta Gangga, the water garden built for the raja of Karangasem in the 1940s, while koi circle below. Continue to Amed, where jukung outriggers are pulled up on black sand beneath dry, terraced hills.

Day 4

Tulamben: The Liberty Wreck & Return

East Bali, Indonesia

Snorkel over the USAT Liberty at Tulamben, a cargo ship torpedoed in 1942 that now lies in shallow water a short swim from the stony beach. Then drive back across the island, around three hours, for the evening flight.

Mount Agung sets much of the rhythm here, and we plan walks around its weather and the village ceremony calendar. With a fifth day, Besakih, Bali’s mother temple on Agung’s slopes, is under an hour from Sidemen.
