Trip Experience Guide
A gentle trip built on short drives and long lunches. Hallstatt is the anchor, but the lakes and salt roads around it are where the week really opens up.
Day 1
Salzburg – Hallstatt
Collected from Salzburg and driven south through the lake district, stopping wherever the view asks for it. You reach Hallstatt in the late afternoon, once the day-trippers have gone and the village belongs to the people staying in it.
Day 2
The Salt Mine & Skywalk
Up the funicular to the oldest working salt mine in the world, where the tunnels have been cut for three thousand years. There are wooden slides down between levels, which children and adults enjoy in roughly equal measure.
Day 3
Hallstättersee by Boat
A slow morning on the lake in a traditional flat-bottomed boat, the kind built for these waters. Afternoon in Obertraun, or the Dachstein ice caves if the weather turns.
Day 4
Gosau & the Dachstein
A short drive to the Gosau lakes, where the Dachstein glacier reflects in the water on a still day. An easy walk around the lower lake, and lunch at a farmhouse that cooks what the valley produces.
Day 5
Bad Ischl – Departure
Out through Bad Ischl, the spa town where the Habsburgs spent their summers, with time for coffee and a slice of something before the run back to Salzburg.
Hallstatt is small and fills up by mid-morning, so we time your days to be in the village when it is quiet and elsewhere when it is not.
