Two days in Bangkok, with the old royal quarter walked early and the river used as the main road. The Grand Palace at opening, Wat Arun’s porcelain spire seen from the water, and a longtail through the Thonburi canals.
Trip Experience Guide
A short city stay that leans on boats rather than traffic. Temples take the cool mornings, the afternoons slow right down, and evenings end among Chinatown’s food stalls.
Day 1
Rattanakosin – The Grand Palace & Wat Pho
Be at the Grand Palace for the 8.30 opening, shoulders and knees covered, and reach the Emerald Buddha before the crowds. At Wat Pho, the 46-metre reclining Buddha has soles inlaid with mother-of-pearl. After dark, dinner is on Yaowarat Road in Chinatown.
Day 2
Thonburi – Canals, Wat Arun & Return
Take a longtail across the Chao Phraya into the Thonburi khlongs, past stilted wooden houses and the artists’ lane at Khlong Bang Luang. Climb Wat Arun’s steep central prang, studded with broken porcelain, then transfer to Suvarnabhumi for the onward flight.
We time the palace and the canals around the heat, and around your appetite for temples. Add a day and the ruined former capital of Ayutthaya is about ninety minutes north by road.
