Three days in Chiang Mai, much of it spent inside the square moat of the old city. Monks collecting alms at dawn, the gilded chedi of Doi Suthep above the valley, and a morning cooking in a family kitchen.
Trip Experience Guide
A temple town taken slowly, with a mountain and a market to break the pattern. Days begin before seven, and by late afternoon there is time to wander the lanes.
Day 1
The Old City – Temples Within the Moat
Walk in through Tha Phae Gate and spend the afternoon among the old city’s temples: the ruined brick chedi of Wat Chedi Luang, then the teak hall of Wat Phan Tao next door. On Sundays, the Walking Street market fills Ratchadamnoen Road after dark.
Day 2
Doi Suthep – Morning Alms & the Mountain Temple
Rise before six to watch monks collect alms in the old city lanes, then drive up Doi Suthep to Wat Phra That. A staircase of more than three hundred steps, lined with naga serpents, climbs to a gold chedi with the valley spread below.
Day 3
Chiang Mai – A Family Cooking Lesson & Return
Shop at a local market for galangal, holy basil and lemongrass, then cook khao soi and a curry paste pounded by hand in a family kitchen. Lunch is what you made; afterwards, the short transfer to the airport for the onward flight.
We move the alms walk and the mountain around the weather and your energy. With an extra day, Chiang Rai’s White Temple is about three hours north by road.
