Your Trip Preview
Five days across the South Island from Christchurch to Queenstown by road. Turquoise Lake Tekapo under a dark-sky reserve, the Hooker Valley beneath Aoraki, and the tussock of the Lindis Pass.
Trip Experience Guide
An overland journey through the Mackenzie Basin and into Central Otago. Each day has a single drive of three hours or less, with long walks and clear night skies between.
Day 1
Christchurch: Arrival & the Avon River
Land at Christchurch Airport and head into a city rebuilt with care after its earthquakes. Take a flat-bottomed punt along the Avon through the Botanic Gardens, then walk to the cardboard cathedral as the light softens.
Day 2
Lake Tekapo: The Good Shepherd & Dark Skies
Cross the Canterbury Plains and climb into the Mackenzie Basin, about three hours. Walk to the stone Church of the Good Shepherd on the milky-blue lake, then join an observatory tour on Mount John inside the Aoraki Mackenzie Dark Sky Reserve.
Day 3
Aoraki/Mount Cook: The Hooker Valley Track
Drive an hour past Lake Pukaki to Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. The Hooker Valley track runs ten kilometres return over swing bridges, including the new 189-metre suspension bridge, to Hooker Lake, where small icebergs float below the summit.
Day 4
Wanaka: The Lindis Pass & Arrowtown
Cross the golden tussock of the Lindis Pass to Wanaka, around two and a half hours, for lunch by the lake. Take the Crown Range road over to Arrowtown’s gold-rush cottages, then down into Queenstown by evening.
Day 5
Queenstown: Lake Wakatipu & Return
Ride the Skyline gondola above Lake Wakatipu for the Remarkables in morning light. Walk the lakefront gardens and the steamship wharf, then take the short transfer to Queenstown Airport for your departure.
Alpine weather sets the order here, so the Hooker Valley day can swap with Tekapo if the clouds sit low. Add a day and Milford Sound is four hours from Queenstown by road, or a short scenic flight.
