Four days in a loop south from Auckland through the Waikato and back. Glowworm caves at Waitomo, Pōhutu Geyser in Rotorua, and the round green doors of the Hobbiton Movie Set.
Trip Experience Guide
A compact road trip through farmland, limestone country and steaming valleys. Drives stay under three hours, and each day has one main event.
Day 1
Auckland: Arrival & the Waitematā Harbour
Land at Auckland Airport and settle in near the waterfront. Walk from the Viaduct to Wynyard Quarter as the yachts come in, then ride the lift up the 328-metre Sky Tower for the two harbours at dusk.
Day 2
Waitomo: The Glowworm Caves
Drive south through the Waikato’s dairy country to Waitomo, about two and a half hours. Walk through limestone chambers, then drift by boat in silence beneath thousands of blue-green glowworms before continuing on to Rotorua and its faint sulphur air.
Day 3
Rotorua: Te Puia & a Māori Evening
Spend the morning at Te Puia in the Whakarewarewa valley, where Pōhutu Geyser throws water skyward and mud pools bubble grey. Walk beneath the Redwoods canopy after lunch, then share a hāngī meal and kapa haka in the evening.
Day 4
Hobbiton: The Shire & Return
Drive an hour to the Hobbiton Movie Set near Matamata for a guided walk past forty-four hobbit holes, the mill and the Green Dragon Inn. From there it is two hours north to Auckland Airport for your departure.
The loop is planned around Hobbiton’s timed tours and your arrival hour, and can run in either direction. Add a day and Lake Taupō and the Huka Falls are an hour south of Rotorua.
