Trip Experience Guide

A city-and-river trip where eating is half the point. Late nights in Saigon give way to a dawn start on the water at Can Tho.

Day 1

Saigon: Cholon & a Night of Street Food

Start in Cholon, the old Chinese district, where incense coils hang from the roof of Thien Hau Temple. After dark, ride pillion behind a local guide to street stalls for com tam, crisp banh xeo and snails cooked in coconut milk.

Day 2

The Mekong Delta: South to Can Tho

Drive south to Can Tho, around three and a half hours, crossing the broad arms of the Mekong on the way. In the afternoon, cycle village lanes past fruit orchards, then walk Ninh Kieu wharf as the lights come on.

Day 3

Cai Rang: The Floating Market & Return

Board a small boat at 5.30 for Cai Rang, where traders hang pineapples and pumpkins from tall bamboo poles to show what they sell. Breakfast is noodle soup cooked on a sampan, then the drive back to Saigon for the evening flight.

The trip can lean toward the city or the delta, as you prefer. Add a day and the Cu Chi tunnels are about ninety minutes north-west of Saigon by road.
