Three days in Hue, the old Nguyen capital, ending with a train ride over the Hai Van Pass. The walled Imperial City, royal tombs among pines and lotus ponds, and the careful, fiery cooking of the former court.
Trip Experience Guide
An unhurried history trip with a keen eye on the table. Mornings belong to the citadel and the tombs; afternoons to the river, a market or a long lunch.
Day 1
The Imperial City: Through the Noon Gate
Enter through Ngo Mon, the Noon Gate, and walk the restored halls and courtyards of the Imperial City in the softer afternoon light. Dinner is bun bo Hue, the city’s lemongrass beef noodle soup, sharp with chilli and shrimp paste.
Day 2
The Perfume River: Tombs & Thien Mu Pagoda
A dragon boat upriver in the morning to Thien Mu Pagoda, whose seven-storey tower has watched the water since 1844. Then by road to the tombs of Minh Mang and Tu Duc, their pavilions and lotus lakes framed by frangipani and pine.
Day 3
Hai Van Pass: The Coastal Train & Return
Breakfast at Dong Ba Market on banh beo, small steamed rice cakes, then board the train south. For around two and a half hours the line hugs the coast over the Hai Van Pass, ending in Da Nang for the onward flight.
We can lean the days toward history or toward Hue’s royal cooking. Add a day and the lantern-lit old town of Hoi An is under an hour south of Da Nang.
