Seven days from Jaipur to Udaipur by road, with two tiger safaris at Ranthambore and a night beneath Chittorgarh’s walls. Amber Fort, the nine-storey Vijay Stambh and a boat on Lake Pichola at sundown.
Trip Experience Guide
A classic Rajasthan circuit by car, with no drive longer than about five hours. Early starts are kept for the safaris, and the palace towns are taken at a walk.
Day 1
Jaipur: Arrival & the Walled City
Arrive at Jaipur International Airport and head into the Pink City for Hawa Mahal’s latticed front and the lanes of Johari Bazaar. Dinner is Rajasthani, with dal baati churma and ker sangri, on a rooftop facing the old walls.
Day 2
Jaipur: Amber Fort & the City Palace
Reach Amber Fort at opening for the Sheesh Mahal before the crowds, then return to the City Palace and the stone instruments of Jantar Mantar. Late in the afternoon, drive up to Nahargarh as the city below turns pink, then gold.
Day 3
Ranthambore: The Drive South & an Afternoon Safari
Drive about three and a half hours south to Sawai Madhopur. The afternoon safari by open gypsy enters the park below Ranthambore Fort, through dry deciduous forest where tigers use the old tracks and lakeside ruins.
Day 4
Ranthambore: Dawn Safari & the Fort
Enter the park at first light, when tigers are most often seen along the lakes near Jogi Mahal. After a rest, climb to the tenth-century Ranthambore Fort and the Trinetra Ganesh temple, where wedding invitations for Ganesha arrive by post.
Day 5
Chittorgarh: The Great Fort
Drive about five hours west via Bundi to Chittorgarh. The fort covers a 280-hectare plateau, and the late light is best at the Vijay Stambh, the nine-storey victory tower, and at Padmini’s palace beside its pool.
Day 6
Udaipur: City Palace & Lake Pichola
Drive two hours to Udaipur and spend the afternoon in the City Palace, its courtyards stepping down towards the water. At sundown, take a boat on Lake Pichola past the Lake Palace to Jag Mandir as the ghats light up.
Day 7
Udaipur: The Old City & Return
Walk up to Jagdish Temple for the morning aarti, then down through the lanes to Bagore ki Haveli on Gangaur Ghat. Leave for Maharana Pratap Airport, about 40 minutes away, for your flight home.
Ranthambore’s core zones open from October to June and permits sell out early, so we book the safaris first. With an extra day, the painted palaces of Bundi sit on the road between the park and Chittorgarh.
