Trip Experience Guide

A city trip with two big days out, one along the cliffs and one to the island. Mornings start in the laneways and markets; evenings run late when the coast demands it.

Day 1

Melbourne: Arrival & the Laneways

Land at Melbourne Airport and drive 30 minutes into the city. Walk the covered arcades and Degraves Street, then the painted walls of Hosier Lane to Federation Square, where the trams clatter past Flinders Street Station’s copper domes.

Day 2

The Great Ocean Road: The Twelve Apostles

Leave early for Torquay and follow the road as it cuts into the cliffs past Lorne and Apollo Bay. Koalas doze in the manna gums at Kennett River, and the Twelve Apostles glow orange by late afternoon before the faster inland drive home.

Day 3

Phillip Island: Market, MCG & the Penguin Parade

Start at Queen Victoria Market with hot jam doughnuts, then tour the Melbourne Cricket Ground’s members’ stand and dressing rooms. By late afternoon you are two hours south on Phillip Island, watching little penguins waddle up the sand after sunset.

Day 4

Royal Botanic Gardens: A Last Morning & Return

Little penguin, Phillip Island, Australia

A slow walk around the ornamental lake at the Royal Botanic Gardens, with the city skyline over the ferns. Lunch along Southbank by the Yarra, then the transfer to Melbourne Airport for your onward flight.

We time the coast day around sunset and the weather, and choose the market day because it closes on Mondays and Wednesdays. Add a day and the Yarra Valley’s wineries and chocolate makers are an hour north-east.
