Trip Experience Guide

A river and countryside trip, with the city left behind on the first afternoon. Days are spent on the water or on a bicycle, and evenings are unhurried in Yangshuo.

Day 1

Guilin: Elephant Trunk Hill & the Lakes

Arrive in Guilin and walk the riverbank to Elephant Trunk Hill, a limestone arch dipping its trunk into the Li. After dark, the Sun and Moon Pagodas are lit gold and copper on Shan Lake.

Day 2

The Li River: A Cruise to Yangshuo

Board a boat south of Guilin and drift about four hours between karst peaks, water buffalo and bamboo groves. Near Xingping, the view on the twenty-yuan note slides past, and you step ashore in Yangshuo by mid-afternoon.

Day 3

The Yulong River: Bamboo Rafts & Return

Float down the Yulong on a bamboo raft poled by a boatman, past the arched stone Dragon Bridge. Cycle back through rice paddies beneath Moon Hill, then it is roughly ninety minutes by road to Guilin’s airport.

Days are paced to the weather, which in these hills often means morning mist and clear afternoons. Add a day and the Longji rice terraces are two hours north of Guilin.
