Three days above the heat in the Cameron Highlands, where the afternoons at Tanah Rata rarely climb much past 25°C. Tea terraces at Sungei Palas, the cloud-wet boardwalk of the Mossy Forest, and Ipoh’s cave temples on the way down.
Trip Experience Guide
A cool-climate retreat with walks in the morning and tea in the afternoon. Evenings are for a jumper and something warm, perhaps a steamboat.
Day 1
Tanah Rata: Arrival & the Hill Road
Drive north from Kuala Lumpur, about three and a half hours, the last stretch a slow climb through forest and vegetable farms. Tanah Rata sits at around 1,440 metres, and by evening the air is cool enough for a steamboat hotpot.
Day 2
Brinchang: Mossy Forest & Tea Terraces
Go early to the Mossy Forest near the summit of Gunung Brinchang, where a boardwalk runs through stunted trees thick with moss and pitcher plants. Afterwards, drop to the Sungei Palas tea terraces, their rows combed across the slopes, and drink a pot above them.
Day 3
Ipoh: Cave Temples & Return
Wind down to Ipoh, about ninety minutes, to see Buddhist shrines set in limestone caves at Sam Poh Tong and Kek Lok Tong. After white coffee in the old town, the ETS train reaches Kuala Lumpur in around two and a half hours.
The highlands are planned around the weather, which often turns misty after lunch, so the walks go first. If you prefer longer hikes, the numbered jungle trails from Tanah Rata can easily fill an extra day.
