Three unhurried days in the dry-zone heart of the island, based among the lakes and forest near Sigiriya. The rock fortress in the cool of early morning, Dambulla’s painted caves and the granite Buddhas of Polonnaruwa.
Trip Experience Guide
An ancient-cities journey with the climbing done early and the history taken slowly. The hottest hours are left for the pool, a village lunch or a nap.
Day 1
Sigiriya – Arrival & Pidurangala at Dusk
Drive north from Colombo, roughly four hours, to the jungle and old reservoirs around Sigiriya. In the late afternoon climb neighbouring Pidurangala, a scramble over boulders near the top, for the view of Sigiriya’s sheer face turning copper.
Day 2
Sigiriya & Dambulla – The Lion Rock & Cave Temples
Be at the gates as they open and climb past the painted maidens and the Lion’s Paws to the palace ruins on the summit, some 1,200 steps up. In the afternoon, Dambulla’s five caves hold more than 150 Buddha images under painted ceilings.
Day 3
Polonnaruwa – Gal Vihara & Return
Cycle between the ruins of Polonnaruwa, the medieval capital an hour east, ending at Gal Vihara, where four Buddhas are carved from a single granite face. From there it is around five hours by road back to Colombo and the airport.
Tickets for Sigiriya and the ancient cities are arranged ahead, and the climbs are timed to the season’s heat. With a fourth day, the elephant gathering at Minneriya, forty minutes away, is at its height from July to October.
