Hanoi, Halong Bay and Hoi An
Five nights covering the three places most people want from a first trip to Vietnam: an old capital, a bay full of limestone, and a river town that knows exactly how good it looks after dark.
Nights one and two
Hanoi
The Old Quarter is thirty six streets that were each named for the trade once practised on them, and several still are. A full day city tour covers the Ho Chi Minh mausoleum quarter, the Temple of Literature and Hoan Kiem lake, and leaves you loose in the lanes afterwards. Coffee here is strong, served over condensed milk or, in one or two places, whipped with egg.
Night three
Halong Bay
Nearly two thousand limestone islands, most of them uninhabited, standing in water that turns jade in the afternoon. You board in the late morning, eat lunch while the boat moves, swim or kayak in a quiet inlet, and wake up somewhere with no road to it.
Nights four and five
Hoi An and Ba Na Hills
Hoi An was a trading port for four hundred years and the old town has barely been touched since. Silk lanterns go up at dusk along the Thu Bon river and the whole place slows down. A day trip climbs to Ba Na Hills for the Golden Bridge, the one held up by two enormous stone hands, with a cable car ride that is a long way up in itself.
Hoi An after dark is the photograph everybody comes home with, and it still surprises them.
Day by day
Met at Noi Bai and driven into the city, about forty minutes. The rest of the day is yours, and the Old Quarter is on the doorstep.
A full day on a shared tour: the mausoleum quarter, the Temple of Literature, Hoan Kiem lake and the Old Quarter lanes.
The drive east takes around two and a half hours on the expressway. Board at noon, lunch on the move, swimming or kayaking in the afternoon, dinner and a night on board.
Back to shore in the morning, then the flight south to Da Nang and a half hour transfer to Hoi An. The lanterns come on at dusk.
The cable car up, the bridge and the gardens at the top, and back down to Hoi An for the evening.
A private transfer to Da Nang airport, forty minutes from the old town.
