Grand Tour of Jordan
Ten days and nine nights, the same route as the short trip but with room in it: two nights at Petra, a night in the desert, two on the Red Sea at Aqaba and two on the Dead Sea, with free days built in rather than squeezed out.
Days one and two
Amman and Jerash
A settling in day, then the Roman north. Jerash has the colonnaded street, the oval plaza, two theatres and a hippodrome, and it takes a morning to do properly. Back in Amman the Citadel, the Roman theatre and the downtown museums fill the afternoon, and everywhere you look there is something older underneath.
Days three to five
The King’s Highway, Petra and Little Petra
Madaba, Mount Nebo and Kerak on the road south, then two nights at Petra. A full day inside the main site and, the next morning, Little Petra at Siq al Barid, a smaller Nabataean site cut into a 450 metre canyon and reached separately from the main gate.
Days five and six
Wadi Rum and Aqaba
The jeep tour crosses the desert T. E. Lawrence called vast and echoing, and the night is spent at a camp. In the morning the road continues to Aqaba on the Red Sea, where a glass bottom boat trip covers an hour of snorkelling and an hour over the coral. The next day is free, in a resort town built for exactly that.
Days eight to ten
The Dead Sea
North from the Red Sea to the lowest point on land, fifty five kilometres south east of Amman. Two nights here with a free day in between, which after a week of driving is the right way to finish. The water holds you up, the mud is worth the mess, and the light over the valley in the evening is the last thing you will remember.
Ten days is what Jordan asks for. Six is what most people give it.
Day by day
Met inside Queen Alia, through the visa desk and to the hotel. Nothing scheduled.
The Roman city in the morning, then the Citadel, the amphitheatre and the downtown museums. Museums close on Tuesdays.
The King’s Highway with three stops, arriving at Petra in the evening.
The Siq, the Treasury, the royal tombs, the theatre and the colonnaded street, with the Monastery climb for anyone who wants it.
Siq al Barid in the morning, then south to the desert for the jeep tour, dinner and a night at the camp.
To Aqaba, with a glass bottom boat trip: an hour snorkelling and an hour over the coral.
No vehicle and no schedule. The Red Sea resort is the whole plan.
A free morning, check out at noon and the drive north to the lowest point on earth.
Another day without a vehicle. Float, take the mud seriously, and watch the light change over the valley.
Breakfast, then the transfer to Queen Alia, timed three and a half hours before your flight.

Four star runs the Mena Tyche, Petra Canyon, Marina Plaza Aqaba and the Dead Sea Spa Hotel, or similar. Three star runs the Meneur, the Edom Hotel, AlZaitouna Aqaba and the Dead Sea Spa Hotel, or similar. Wadi Rum is the Hasan Al Zawaideh Camp on every grade, or similar.
