Seminyak and Ubud
Five nights split between the coast and the hills, three by the beach and two among rice terraces, with a car and driver for the days you want to move.
Nights one to three
Seminyak
The south coast is where Bali does sunsets, beach clubs and an evening that starts late. Seminyak is quieter than Kuta and closer to the good food, and the beach runs for kilometres with nothing on it but volcanic sand and people waiting for six o’clock. Tanah Lot, the temple on the rocks, is forty minutes up the coast and best at the end of the day.
The drive
Into the hills
An hour and a half inland the air cools and the landscape turns into terraces. The road passes temple gates, roadside warungs and enough waterfalls to stop at two without losing the afternoon.
Nights four and five
Ubud
Ubud sits in a valley of rice terraces and river gorges and has been the island’s craft and dance town for a century. Mornings are for the terraces at Tegallalang before the coaches, afternoons for a waterfall or the monkey forest, evenings for a gamelan performance that finishes early enough to eat afterwards.
Three nights on the coast and two in the hills is the split almost everybody wishes they had booked.
Day by day
Met at Denpasar and driven to Seminyak, about half an hour. The beach is a short walk and sunset is the only appointment.
A day at your own pace with the car available: Tanah Lot in the late afternoon, or the Uluwatu cliffs and the kecak dance at dusk.
A free day. Most people spend it between the beach, a long lunch and a spa, which is the correct use of it.
The drive inland with stops on the way, then check in at Ubud and an evening walk through the town.
Tegallalang early, a waterfall in the middle of the day, and the monkey forest or a dance performance in the evening.
The transfer back to Denpasar takes around ninety minutes from Ubud, longer in the afternoon.
