Egypt rewards an early alarm. The great sites are quietest in their first hour, and the light on the stone is softer. With the Grand Egyptian Museum now fully open beside the Giza plateau, Cairo deserves two nights before the flight south. We usually join the river at Aswan, spend a few nights on a Nile cruise or a sailing dahabiya, and finish in Luxor among the temples and royal tombs. October to April brings the kindest weather; summer days begin at dawn.
